I need to set the stage here: I am a hat guy. Not casually — I rotate between roughly 30 different hats depending on the day, the season, and what I'm doing. It's a running joke with people who know me. "What hat is Joe wearing today? Did he get a new one?" So when I say I had high expectations for this hat, I mean it. I know what a good hat feels like.
First Look: Genuinely Impressive
I'll start with what Rivian got right, because the aesthetics on this hat are really solid. I picked up the gray colorway and it looks sharp. It really does. The color is clean, the trucker mesh in the back gives it that classic summer feel, and the Rivian compass logo on the front is subtle enough that if you don't know it's a Rivian logo, you'd never think twice about it.
That last point matters to me. I don't generally try to be too "brandy" or show off a bunch of logos and labels when I don't need to. So having a hat that looks good on its own merits — without screaming "HEY, I DRIVE A RIVIAN" — is a win. It just looks like a nice, clean trucker hat.
Then I Put It On
And that's where the magic ended.
The hat feels stiff. Not "new hat that needs breaking in" stiff — more like "this material isn't going to soften up" stiff. The front panel has very little give to it, and the overall crown feels shallow. When I put it on, it sits higher on my head than I'd like, and it just doesn't have that comfortable, broken-in feel that I look for in a daily-wear hat.
For context, some of my go-to hats right now are from Branded Bills and '47 Brand. Both make trucker-style hats that feel great from day one. They're soft, they sit right, and you forget you're wearing them. The Rivian hat? You don't forget you're wearing it, and not in a good way.
The Hat Game Has Evolved
Here's the thing — hats have come a long way in the last few years. Companies are putting out really cool styles, innovative fits, and premium materials at every price point. The bar is high right now, and the Compass Trucker Hat just doesn't clear it. It feels like a hat from five years ago when brands were still figuring out that fit matters as much as looks.
Where It'll End Up
I'm being real here: this hat is probably going to become my gardening hat. Or my "doing yard work and don't care if it gets dirty" hat. It's not bad enough to throw away, but it's not good enough to reach for when I'm heading out the door. With 30 other options that fit better and feel better, this one just doesn't make the rotation.
Pros & Cons
Final Verdict
2.5 out of 5 stars.
Looks good, doesn't feel good. If you're not picky about hat fit and just want a clean Rivian-branded trucker hat, you might be perfectly happy with it. But if you're someone who takes hats seriously — and I very much do — there are better options at every price point. This one's destined for yard work duty, and that tells you everything you need to know.
