Let me be upfront: this is probably not something I was going to spend my own money on. $35 for new caps to go on where you put the air in your tires? Probably not worth it. But I wanted to get these reviewed and let people know what they're actually getting for their money.
The Concept Is Cool
I'll give Rivian credit for the idea. The caps are black with a yellow compass logo — the signature Rivian design element. On the product page, they look sharp. It's one of those small details that makes you think, "Yeah, that's a nice little touch for my ride." The kind of thing that shows you're paying attention to the details.
The Reality: You'll Never See Them
Here's the problem. Once they're on the tires, I notice them very, very rarely. They're small. They don't stand out. My car is black on black on black, so these black caps with a tiny yellow compass on them just... disappear. It's not like they're completely impossible to see, but you have to be looking for them.
Most of the time when I notice them myself, I'm in my garage. And that's only because I'm actively remembering that I bought these and put them on my car. I would say there's a very strong chance that nobody else outside of me has ever noticed they exist. Not a single person has ever said, "Hey, cool valve stem caps." Not once.
Functionally Identical
For $35, what do you actually get? Caps that screw onto your valve stems. That's it. They do nothing different functionally from the stock caps that came with the car. The look is slightly — and I mean slightly — better than stock, but we're talking about an improvement so marginal that it really doesn't justify the price tag.
The Theft Factor
This might sound paranoid, but it's actually something I think about. If someone spots these and thinks they're cool — a kid, a teenager, whoever — when you're parked at the store or wherever, I would not be surprised if somebody swipes one or more of them. And then what? Now I'm annoyed, I'm ticked off, and I have to either find new ones or put the old stock caps back on. It's just not worth the headache.
Pros & Cons
Final Verdict
2 out of 5 stars.
The idea is cool, but the execution falls flat. On anything but a light-colored car, these are practically invisible. They do nothing different from stock caps, nobody will ever notice them, and at $35, they're a throwaway purchase. Check it out for yourself:
See what I mean? Black on black on black — they practically disappear.
Honestly? Save your money for something you'll actually notice.
